Channel Constriction Predicts Pool‐Riffle Velocity Reversals Across Landscapes

Research regarding self-maintenance of pool-riffle river morphology has focused on hydraulics within individual couplets. Here, we make a scientific leap from one site to 702 couplets across northern California understand the frequency foundational velocity-reversal hypothesis. A geometrical, mass and energy conservation-based velocity reversal criterion was used predict occurrence reversal. Only 18% all met established criteria indicating At locations with riffle-to-pool bankfull width ratios greater than 1.2, more 50% conditions. Velocity pools were almost always (89%) associated channel constrictions while riffles typically (71%) expansions, albeit less often. Therefore, landscapes, it appears propagate maintenance. Phasing between depth variability is central fluvial morphodynamics ecology must be considered in sustainable eco-engineering.
